Asynchronous Pre-Session

How do we get our sessions to be compact, with an emphasis on hands-on learning?

For asynchronous learning, presenters upload their resources beforehand. Participants read up so that we can hit the ground running!

Read up on your relevant sessions here, starting 14 January, so that session presenters can dive straight in on 21 January.

Approach for Blended Learning (BL) @PEPS

Learning is accelerated when 3 conditions are present: skill, will and thrill (Hattie & Donoghue, 2016). Students with the necessary learning skills and the will to persevere in learning will be able to experience the thrill of learning. To develop these 3 conditions, a teacher must actively help students learn how to learn, in part by helping them select appropriate learning strategies. In time, students must be able to choose their own learning strategies as part of Self-directed Learning (SDL).

To provide students the opportunity to identify and apply learning strategies during BL, learning strategies must be explicitly embedded in classroom instruction and to complement teachers’ role in SDL, students need to understand their role in order to self-evaluate their ability for SDL. The characteristics of a self-directed learner is as follows:

  • I know where I am going: Understands current performance in relation to learning objectives and success criteria.

  • I have tools for the journey: Understands that they can select a range of learning strategies to move learning forward.

  • I monitor my progress: Actively seeks and responds to feedback from others, including teachers and peers as they assess their own performance. Knows that mistakes are learning opportunities.

  • I recognise when I’m ready for what’s next: compares current performance and success criteria to gauge when they are ready to move on.

  • I know what to do next: Knowing what to do when you do not know what to do.
